Stephen Tanzer’s International Wine Cellar:

  • 2008 Rhone Style Red Pipestone Vineyards, Paso Robles. (40% syrah, 30% grenache and 30% mourvedre): Opaque ruby. Aromas of raspberry, plum and underbrush, with complicating notes of woodsmoke and licorice. Sweet, pliant and weighty, with red and dark berry flavors brightened by harmonious acidity. The lingering finish features smooth tannins, sweet oak and a hint of warmth. 89
  • 2011 Grenache Estate Pipestone Vineyards, Paso Robles. Deep ruby. Pungent, spice-accented aromas of cherry compote, smoked meat and vanilla. Offers deeply pitched red berry and peppery spice flavors, a suggestion of candied rose and a strong back-end jolt of woodsmoke. Closes on a slightly dry note, with strong spice and floral qualities and dusty tannins. 88
  • 2010 Syrah Estate Pipestone Vineyards, Paso Robles. Inky purple. Jammy blackberry and blueberry on the nose, plus subtle olive and espresso nuances. Plump dark fruit compote flavors offer very good depth and velvety texture, with a smoky element gaining strength with air. Finishes on a gently tannic note, with very good clarity and length and lingering sweetness. 90
  • 2010 Syrah Reserve Pipestone Vineyards, Paso Robles. Dark purple. Cherry-vanilla, cassis and smoky oak on the perfumed nose. Juicy and sweet, offering lush dark berry compote and spicy oak flavors along with a note of vanilla. The supple finish features a bitter cherry skin quality and lingers with good clarity and smoky length. Add a couple of points if you're not oak-averse. 90
  • 2009 Mourvedre Estate Pipestone Vineyards, Paso Robles. Inky ruby. Smoky cherry and blackberry on the perfumed nose. Ripe and fleshy, offering powerful black and blue fruit flavors and notes of smoked meat, licorice and bitter chocolate. Shows serious depth and structure but doesn't come off as heavy. Finishes spicy and long, with dusty tannins adding back-end grip. 90
